About Dehradun

Located in the foothills of the Himalayas, in the state of Uttarakhand, Dehradun is renowned for its scenic beauty. The name comes from two words – Dera, which means camp, and Dun, which means valley. It is one of the oldest cities in the country and if legends are to be believed, Lord Rama and his brother Laxman did penance in Dehradun after slaying the demon king, Ravana.

The city is at an altitude of 1,400 feet and boasts a pleasant climate throughout the year. Dehradun is also a gateway to popular hill stations like Mussoorie and Nainital. It is also located quite near to Haridwar and Rishikesh, two very popular pilgrimage cities.

Birthplace of Dronacharya, revered guru of Kauravas and Pandavas, Dehradun is also known as the School Capital of India due to the presence of institutions, like Forest Research Institutions, Indian Military Academy, Doon School, Welham School, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Studies, and the National Institute for the Visually Handicapped.


Dehradun is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit is in summer when the temperature is salubrious and visitors can go out sightseeing. Dehradun is the capital of Uttarakhand and hence, it will well-connected by air, train, and road. The city is home to the Jolly Grant Airport, which connects to most major cities in the country. It is 31km from the city. Trains, such as Jan Shatabdi, Nanda Devi Express, and Shatabdi, connect Dehradun to other cities in India. The railway station is merely 2km from the city centre and there are autos, Vikrams, taxis, and buses that people can use to reach other parts of the city. The NH7 connects Dehradun to Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh. The Uttarakhand Road Transportation operates intercity buses to enable visitors to get to and from Dehradun. Dehradun offers Kumuani or Pahadi cuisine. Kafuli is a delicious, creamy dish made from spinach and fenugreek seeds. Chainsoo, which is a Garhwali tribal dish, comprises black urad dal which is eaten with rice. Other dishes that you should savour are Gulgula, Kandalee ka Saag, Gahat ki Daal and Aloo ke Gutke. Indian sweets are very popular in Dehradun and local sweets include Bal Mithai, Jhangora ki Kheer, pista and aata biscuits, Arsa, and stick jaw candy.
