Uttar Pradesh finds mention in sacred epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata. Besides being a birthplace of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna, Uttar Pradesh is also associated with the birth of Jainism and Buddhism. Uttar Pradesh retained significance even in the times of Mughals and British Rule. Geographically, Uttar Pradesh can be divided into two regions - Southern Hills and Gangetic Plains. Agriculture is the main occupation of over 60 percent of the population and the main languages spoken here are Hindi and Urdu. Uttar Pradesh is famous across the world for hosting Kumbh Mela. Every sixth year in Prayagraj, Kumbh Mela is observed which is the largest congregation of humans in the world.

Varanasi, situated on the banks of river Ganga, is the holiest city of Hindus and is one of the most visited places in Uttar Pradesh. Mathura and Brindaban, associated with Lord Krishna and Radha, and Ayodhya, the birthplace of Lord Ram are places of religious significance for Hindus. Hindus also long to visit Prayagraj to see the confluence (Sangam) of holy rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati. Agra attracts tourists from all over the globe because of its iconic Taj Mahal and Lucknow is famous for its rich culture, famous monuments, and Mughlai cuisine encouraged by the Nawabs in the Mughal era. Sarnath and Kushinagar are places of interest for Buddhists.
