Uttarakhand is a nature lover’s paradise. Often called Land of the Gods (Devabhumi in Hindi), the state is renowned for its numerous pilgrimage sites and Hindu temples.

At a Glimpse

Uttarakhand was carved out of the Himalayan regions of Uttar Pradesh to form the 27th state of India on 9 November 2000. The state is divided into two regions, namely Garhwal and Kumaon. The culture of the state is based on the traditional values of the people, who love simplicity, and the region’s mythology. While Garhwalis and Kumaonis are the two main inhabitants of Uttarakhand, there are other ethnic groups, such as Rajis, Bhotia, Tharus, Jaunsaries, and Bokshas. Kumaoni, Garhwali, Urdu, Hindi, and Punjabi are the main languages spoken here while the traditional dances of Uttarakhand include Baradi Nati, Choliya Dance, Bhotiya Dance, Chancheri, Jhora, Langvir Nritya, and Jagars. The traditional attire of women is ghagra-choli with a veil.
