Located 1475 meters above sea level, Dharamshala is a popular tourist hotspot. Beautiful natural surroundings and the presence of the Dalai Lama of the Tibetan sect attracts both Indian and foreign tourists. The touristy town consists of two distinct regions connected by a 10 minutes drive. Lower Dharamshala houses commercial areas, government offices, schools, and hospitals, and the upper Dharamshala, called McLeod Ganj, is the seat of the Dalai Lama.
The best time to be in Dharamshala is between February to June. The season is at its best during these months, making it an ideal time for trekking and sightseeing. The Tibetan New Year, Losar, falls sometime in February-March is celebrated with gusto and attracts much crowd. Monsoon season is best avoided and winters are frigid cold marked by occasional snowfall.
Dharamshala is well-connected via road, rail and air. You can take a bus service from Pathankot, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Shimla, and Delhi. Pathankot, at a distance of 85 km, is the nearest railway station. From Pathankot you can take a bus or hire a taxi to reach Dharamshala. Gaggal, located at a distance of just 15 km from Dharamshala is the nearest airport. You can get flights to Gaggal from Delhi, Chandigarh, and Kullu. Naturally endowed, culturally, and historically rich, Dharamshala is a spiritual destination that you must plan to visit soon.
When in Dharamsala you can savour Indian, South Indian, Tibetan, and Israeli cuisine. Thukpa, the noodle soup is a staple food of Tibetan cuisine. Prepared with lots of healthy ingredients, Thukpa is definitely a must-try food in Dharamshala. Momos, the famous Tibetan style dumplings popular all over India are much more delicious in Dharamshala than what you might have tried before. Himachali Dham, a traditional feast prepared using lentils and dairy products is another unmissable item. Shapta - chicken dish, Bhagsu cake, and Lang Phing - a pancake, are other favorites amongst tourists.
