Nicely tucked away in the Pir Panjal Range in a cup-shaped valley, Gulmarg is situated at an altitude of 2730m above sea level. It is 56km from Srinagar and is surrounded by the snow-covered Himalayas. Gulmarg is set amidst meadows of flowers, evergreen forested valleys, and deep ravines. In the 19th century, British civil servants began using Gulmarg as a retreat of sorts to escape the torrid summers in the North Indian plains. Today, it is known for its skiing, serene views, and astounding greenery.


The best time to visit Gulmarg is in Summer between March to June. This is also a peak season that sees a lot of travellers. If you are a nature lover or an adventure junkie who does not mind the heat, the months of April, May, and June are better options.


By air, the nearest airport to Gulmarg is in Srinagar, which is 56km away. One can then book a cab to reach Gulmarg. The place is well-connected by bus. You can easily find regular bus services from Srinagar, Sonmarg, and other neighbouring towns in Kashmir. If you are heading to Gulmarg by train, Jammu is the nearest railway station and is at a distance of 290km. Gulmarg's beauty beckons both nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts. Most of the traditional dishes you find are rice-based ones. Usually, a typical meal is rice served with mutton, fish, or chicken cooked with vegetables. Rogan Josh is meatballs in gravy that is popular all through Kashmir while Dum Aloo and Chaman are also popular. Chaman comprises fried paneer in a thick sauce. Other delicacies to try out are Gushtaba, Yakhni, Kashmiri Tujj, and GaddeMonje. Noon tea is also a popular beverage that should be tried if you are at the hill station.
